THE Amilcar Cabral Medal, the highest distinction of the Republic of Guinea
Bissau, has been awarded to Fidel Castro, president of the Councils of State and
Ministers, by the government of that nation and, in particular, by its
president, General Joao Bernardo Vieira, in recognition of Cuban solidarity with
and contributions to that African country.

HAVANA, Jan. 25 (AIN) —. An honorary diploma was awarded to Cuban President
Fidel Castro in the name of the three million grass-roots level participants in
the 15th National Science and Technology Forum, which ended here on Thursday.

Cuba increases forested areas

THE
reduction this year in the amount of pollution to the environment in Cuba was
highlighted yesterday by Dr. José Antonio Díaz Duque, deputy minister for
science, technology and the environment (CITMA). During a press conference he
added that in the eight hydrographic basins of national interest, this figure
dropped, compared with levels in 2005, to 3.8% and 3% in the principal bays.
Also, at the end of the current year, according to the minister’s explanation,
the country’s forested areas rose to 24.54% of national territory...

considerable number of terrestrial mollusks exist in Cuba; the most well-known
include those distinguished by their extraordinary beauty such as the Vianas,
endemic to the western region of the island, with colorful shells in yellow,
burgundy and white. There are also the so-called Liguus snails, which have a
conical shape and are white or yellow, with or without stripes, and can be found
throughout the country and in some of the larger cays.
